A Lings Winner at the Weston!

Friday,14 Oct 2016

Saturday 8th October
Schoolboy Race, 125-250cc

A brilliant showing by our young riders - despite the odd technical gremlin! - saw them all finish in respectable positions between 43rd and 47th. Top of the tree was promising youngster Harvey Thomas (read more about Harvey's Championship win here), who finished 43rd overall after battling through more than his fair share of adversity during the race.
Harvey, riding his Lings Honda CRF250R, made an excellent start but a crash on lap one saw him drop to the back of the field. Undeterred, Harvey gave a demonstration why he's hyped as one to watch and fought his way back up the field to 15th place. Unfortunately it wasn't to be after an unscheduled pit stop with just 15 minutes left of the race lost him his place - however he still managed a more than respectable 43rd place finish.

Just behind him in 44th was Edward Jary on his Lings Husqvarna FC250. A brilliant start saw Edward setting the early pace, powering to first place over the first dune obstacles and leading the field on the long beach straight. Edward gradually settled into a rhythm and held a consistent pace for the remainder of the race.
Jack Youngs, also on a Lings Honda CRF250R, wasn't far behind in 47th after a heavy crash which bent his front brake disc. Jack had been riding at a consistent high pace around the top of the field after a brilliant start, but the crash was too heavy and required a lengthy pit stop for repairs.

Despite the challenges faced (both expected of the Weston Beach Race or otherwise), the lads acquitted themselves brilliantly considering the size of the field (over 60 riders strong) and variety of experience levels. The Weston is infamous for its difficulty so finishing at all is an achievement of which to be seriously proud, let alone to do as well as the team did.

Sunday 9th October
Youth Race, 85 SW/BW

Sam Nunn took his Lings Husqvarna TC85 to the beach track along with 65 other riders with great hopes of a high placed finish after a successful National MX season. Sam has told us already how much he's been enjoying his Big Wheel 85 and his joy was plain to see as he dominated the field almost from start to finish, riding in 2nd place for lap one before taking the lead and finishing over a minute ahead of his next nearest competitor. An awesome victory for Sam who's worked unbelievably hard on his Big Wheel riding over the past year.

Adult Race

Later in the day was the big one - the Adult Solo Race. Over 530 riders took part in one of world MX/Enduros greatest spectacles and the Lings team were sure to play their part.

After a great result in the Schoolboy Race on Saturday Harvey stepped up to take on the Adult Solo challenge, again on Lings Honda CRF250R. Unfortunately for Harvey - despite making good progress up the field - he was involved in an incident which ended with him being hit by a fallen rider’s bike, fracturing his ankle. Harvey battled on regardless, completing the lap before retiring to the pits and seeking medical treatment. Everyone at Lings send Harvey our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Harvey's accident highlights the raw challenge of the Weston Beach Race. Obstacles come from the course, from the conditions and of course from your fellow competitors, so it takes a very special rider indeed to win your race, whatever class you're riding in - let alone to win it multiple times. Step forward distinguished MX/Enduro rider - and 5 time Weston beach Race Champion - Rob Meek, returning to the beach on a Lings Husqvarna FC350. As expected the old magic never leaves you and Rob got away well to take a top 10 place during the first lap. Unfortunately Rob’s bike got jammed in first gear forcing him to stop and put the bike into neutral. This forced Rob to race almost the entire race without a first gear - an incredible challenge that only the best could surmount - and all of Robs experience and nous was tested as he - almost unbelievably - not only finished the race but did so in an incredible 31st place...all without a first gear.
Ben Alexander, also on a Lings Husqvarna FC350, soon settled into an impressive rhythm but unfortunately suffered an issue with his rear tyre that knocked him back to 170th place (of 535 riders). Ben wouldn't be beaten though and powered through adversity to ride the race of his life to climb almost 100 places on the leaderboard and finish the race in 77th - easily beating his own Personal Best of 98th.

Also riding a Husqvarna - a Lings Husqvarna FC250 - was Kieran Snowling, who rode an impressive race from the start - finishing lap 1 in 23rd place and at points riding as high as 16th overall. After a pit stop to solve some goggle issues and recovering from a bought of cramp bought on by the sheer physical toll of the race, Keiran recovered from 23rd place with his sights set on a possible top 10 finish. Unfortunately technical issues thwarted his efforts with 15 minutes left of the race but Keiran wouldn't lie down and kept on battling to finish 53rd overall, beating his own P.B. of 88th position.

Overall the weekend was a huge success for the team given the wide mix of ages and experience levels. The bikes rarely missed a beat but on occasion the conditions were simply too adversarial - thankfully the Lings pit crew was on hand to put in an incredible shift and keep the riders competitive no matter what. Lings would like to express huge gratitude for the crew, the riders and everybody involved in the logistical and psychological support needed by the team. The Weston simply cannot be matched for intensity and difficulty, and is easily the toughest circuit in the world for MX/Enduro riders and their machines. Just making it through can be considered a massive achievement - let alone finishing as well as they did.
